Karla Rose Hanson

Representing District 44 In The North Dakota House

My goals every day are to be open-minded and accessible and to find common ground. I've built relationships with community and state leaders and other lawmakers to forge solutions on a range of issues.

Communication with constituents is very important to me. Along with my seatmates, I've held nearly 20 public forums in the district and sent out dozens of updates since being elected in November 2016.

If you want to discuss an issue, let's connect

As your representative, I am working to:

  • Fight for safe and healthy neighborhoods. This includes addressing the state’s shortage of mental health and addiction services, supporting criminal justice reforms that improve lives while saving money, and championing efforts to reduce gun violence. The current pandemic has also highlighted the need to improve access to affordable health care.

  • Advocate for an economy that works for everyone. Instead of tax breaks for out-of-state oil companies, I've prioritized property tax reform for you, advocated for investments in higher education, and co-sponsored a university research fund to diversify our economy. I also sponsored a paid family leave policy so people don't have to choose between a paycheck and caring for a loved one.

  • Stand up for what's right. I've sponsored several bills that would provide greater transparency and accountability in government as well as a more responsive legislature.

Read news reports about these legislative priorities.

During the 2019 session, I served on the Judiciary and Transportation committees. I also served as the Assistant Minority Leader.

During the 2019-2020 interim, I am serving as vice chair of the Judiciary interim committee and as a member of the Higher Education interim committee, Budget Section and Legislative Management.

I also serve on the the Commission on Juvenile Justice, Crime Victim Services Board, the ND Lottery Commission, and the Pretrial Services Subcommittee of the Minority Justice Implementation Committee.
